Clarification of some mathematical misunderstandings about Savage ’ s foundations of statistics , 1954

چکیده

This note discusses some mathematical misunderstandings about Savage (1954). It is shown that in his model the probability measure cannot be countably additive, that the set of events must be a u-algebra and not just an algebra, that Savage did not characterize all atomless finitely additive probability measures, and that the state space in his model, while infinite, does not have to be uncountable.

The foundations of statistics with black swans

We extend the foundation of statistics to integrate rare events that are potentially catastrophic, called black swans. These include natural hazards, regime change in complex systems, market crashes, catastrophic climate change and major episodes of species extinction. Classic statistics and physics treat such events as ‘outliers’ and often disregard them. We propose a new axiomatization of subj...

Classical subjective expected utility.

We consider decision makers who know that payoff-relevant observations are generated by a process that belongs to a given class M, as postulated in Wald [Wald A (1950) Statistical Decision Functions (Wiley, New York)]. We incorporate this Waldean piece of objective information within an otherwise subjective setting à la Savage [Savage LJ (1954) The Foundations of Statistics (Wiley, New York)] a...

The error-statistical philosophy and the practice of Bayesian statistics: comments on Gelman and Shalizi: 'Philosophy and the practice of Bayesian statistics'.

I am pleased to have the opportunity to comment on this interesting and provocative paper. I shall begin by citing three points on which the authors happily depart from existing work on statistical foundations. First, there is the authors’ recognition that methodology is ineluctably bound up with philosophy. ‘If nothing else, ... strictures derived from philosophy can inhibit research progress’...

Wanting Robustness in Macroeconomics

1.1. Foundations. von Neumann and Morgenstern (1944), Savage (1954), and Muth (1961) created mathematical foundations that applied economists have used to construct quantitative dynamic models for policy making. These foundations give modern dynamic models an internal coherence that lead to sharp empirical predictions. When we acknowledge that models are approximations, logical problems emerge ...

Small worlds: Modeling attitudes toward sources of uncertainty

We introduce the concept of a conditional small world event domain—an extension of Savage’s [The Foundations of Statistics, Wiley, NewYork, 1954] notion of a ‘small world’—as a self-contained collection of comparable events. Under weak behavioral conditions we demonstrate probabilistic sophistication in any small world event domain without relying on monotonicity or continuity. Probabilistic so...
